Southport has a rich aviation history that began in WWII.
From 1940 to 1990, Southport was known as the Canadian Forces Base, Portage la Prairie. At its peak, there were 495 military personnel, and 194 civilian jobs at the base. Throughout that period, the Base served as an integral component of the Central Plains economy. When the Base closure was announced in 1990, Southport was established to manage and develop the site’s assets, and help replace the jobs lost to the local economy. In 1992, Southport was successful in having the Military Flight Training contract, managed by Bombardier located on-site, thus facilitating pilot training for the military. That contract has served as the basis for our growth. Since then, we are proud to have evolved into a dynamic location for commercial, recreational, residential and educational use. Our community is consistently expanding its tenant base and the services we provide to build on our heritage and offer a productive and supportive environment to work and play.
